The US Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (which was merged into the newly established Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, or DPAA, on 30 January 2015) announced on 26 January 2015 that the remains of US Army Air Forces 1st Lt. James F. Gatlin, who had been missing since World War II, had been identified. Gatlin was a copilot of a Martin B-26C Marauder medium bomber that crashed after being struck by enemy fire on a mission near Ahrweiler, Germany, on 23 December 1944. Gatlin and four other crew members were reported killed in action. Remains recovered on 27 May 1999 turned out to be SSgt. Joe Sanchez and now Gatlin. Today, more than 73,000 US service members are unaccounted for from World War II.
