The third Mobile User Objective System, or MUOS, satellite for the US Navy was flown from the Lockheed Martin facility in Sunnyvale, California, to Cape Canaveral AFS, Florida, on board a C-5C Galaxy on 5 November 2014. The spacecraft is scheduled for a January 2015 liftoff aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket. MUOS operates like a smart phone cell tower in the sky, vastly improving current secure mobile satellite communications for warfighters. This satellite will provide MUOS Wideband Code Division Multiple Access technology users with beyond-line-of-sight capability to transmit and receive voice and data using an Internet Protocol-based system. An Air Force crew from the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis AFB, California, flew the satellite from Moffett Federal Airfield, adjacent to the Lockheed Martin facility to Florida. The fourth MUOS satellite is scheduled for delivery and launch in late 2015.
