The Modular Airborne Firefighting System, or MAFFS, is the US military’s way of giving the US Forest Service assistance in putting out forest fires.

In September 2009, a joint US Air Force and Lockheed Martin flight crew set forty-one world aeronautical records on a single flight from Dover AFB, Delaware, on a C-5M Super Galaxy. And in November, an Air Force Reserve Command crew set a speed over a closed course record flying from Dover to Turkey.

For nearly thirty years, almost every airshow presented by the Blue Angels, the US Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron, began with the team’s C-130 Hercules support aircraft making a fiery, smoky, noisy jet-assisted takeoff. That era came to an end on 14 November 2009 as the crew of Fat Albert, the affectionate nickname given to the team’s C-130, carried out the last-ever JATO blastoff.

The ACCA program was initiated in April 2007 to capitalize on the investment in composite materials made by government and industry over the last three decades through the Composites Affordability Initiative. Greater use of the fiber- and resin-based composite materials, which are both strong and light weight, is seen as the way to significantly reduce development time and costs for new aircraft.

Delivery of the first C-130J to Gardermoen came only eighteen months after the US and Norwegian government representatives signed the contract for the Super Hercules.

The squadron's new C-130J flagship, flown by US Air Forces in Europe commander Gen. Roger Brady, made a spectacular entrance, cruising low over Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

The first C-5M Super Galaxy touched down at Dover AFB, Delaware, on 9 February to begin a new chapter in C-5 operations.
