Pilots from the 175th Fighter Squadron, the South Dakota Air National Guard F-16 unit in Sioux Falls, deployed across the state to operate at Ellsworth AFB, near Rapid City, for the unit’s annual live weapons drop exercise on 17-21 September 2012. The 175th FS is not allowed to use live rounds for training purposes around Sioux Falls because of shared airspace with the civilian airport. The deployment consisted of more than ninety Airmen and six F-16s. Known as the Lobos, the 175th previously deployed to Ellsworth in 2007.
