The US Forest Service released two of the six C-130s using the Modular Airborne Firefighting System, or MAFFS, as a result of decreasing wildfire activity in the Rocky Mountain region on 16 July 2012. Two C-130Hs from the 153rd Airlift Wing, the Wyoming Air National Guard unit in Cheyenne, returned home. Crews from the 146th AW, the California ANG C-130J unit at Channel Islands ANGB, moved from Hill AFB, Utah, to Boise, Idaho, where they joined crews from the 302nd AW, the US Air Force Reserve Command C-130H unit from Colorado Springs, Colorado, already operating there. Since being activated on 25 June, the MAFFS crews have completed more than 250 drops, releasing more than 641,000 gallons of retardant.
