The fifth of six C-130J Super Hercules transports on order for the Indian Air Force departed the Lockheed Martin facility in Marietta, Georgia, on 1 September 2011. The crew flew the aircraft to Hindon AFS, near Delhi, where it will be assigned to the recently established 77 Squadron. The IAF’s C-130J Super Hercules are primarily designed to support India’s Special Operations requirement. Equipped with an infrared detection set, the crew can perform precision low-level flying, airdrops, and landings in blackout conditions. The aircraft also is equipped with self-protection systems and a refueling probe for extended range operations. This aircraft is also the fifth to be delivered ahead of schedule. India’s sixth C-130J is scheduled to be delivered in October.
