The Air National Guard’s 176th Wing moved several miles from its former home at Kulis ANGB, in Anchorage, Alaska, to nearby Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in a flyaway ceremony on 12 February 2011. The 176th Wing’s fleet of five C-130s, two HC-130s, and four HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopters took off and circled around for a flyby on the way to Elmendorf. The 176th Wing, which has more than 1,400 assigned personnel, has been at Kulis since 1952. In 2005, the Base Closure and Realignment commission recommended that Kulis be closed and the wing be relocated. The move to Elmendorf is expected to streamline the wing’s support services and capture efficiencies of scale.
