The first C-5A Galaxy to undergo Unscheduled Depot Level Maintenance, or UDLM, arrived at the Lockheed Martin facility in Palmdale, California, on 18 January 2011. The C-5A, assigned to the 105th Airlift Wing at Stewart ANGB, New York, was flown to Palmdale from the base near Newburgh, New York. The C-5 UDLM contract for this aircraft includes removing and replacing crown skins on the top of the fuselage that have become fatigued. The repairs will take approximately five months to complete. The US Air Force assigns UDLM work to other facilities when the C-5 depot line at Warner Robins Air Logistics Center at Robins AFB, Georgia, is at capacity or when specific tasks cannot be completed there.
