On 6 June 1944, C-47 Skytrain crews from the US 37th Troop Carrier Squadron based at RAF Cottesmore, England, dropped Army paratroopers behind enemy lines on D-Day. On 26 May 2014, a 37th Airlift Squadron C-130J crew at Ramstein AB, Germany flew in formation over Germany with the National Warplane Museum’s C-47. Located in Geneseo, New York, the museum’s C-47 was actually flown by the 37th TCS during World War II. Two years fundraising and coordination were required before the team of museum volunteers could make the 3,600 mile trip to Germany in the C-47. Officially named Skytrain, the C-47 was widely and affectionately known as Gooney Bird.
