The 26th Special Tactics Squadron celebrated its activation at Cannon AFB, New Mexico, on 24 April 2014, by parachuting from an MC-130J Commando II to the base flightline to open the ceremony. The 26th STS, formerly Detachment 1 of the 720th Special Tactics Group at Hurlburt Field, Florida, is the first special tactics squadron to be affiliated with the base in Clovis. The squadron is comprised of four special tactics operator career fields to include combat controllers, pararescue jumpers, tactical air control party members, and Special Operations weather team specialists. To provide technical expertise and mission critical assistance to the Special Tacticians, the unit also includes personnel from eighteen combat mission support Air Force Specialty Codes.
