Crews from the 522nd Special Operations Squadron, the MC-130J Commando II unit at Cannon AFB, New Mexico, held the squadron’s first joint training mission 26 September 2013 over northern New Mexico. US Marine Corps MV-22 crews from MCAS New River, North Carolina, were the training partners. The 522nd SOS carries out more than twenty training missions per week, but this marked the first time the squadron had carried out a joint exercise since converting to the MC-130J. The 522nd SOS plans, prepares, and executes missions to directly support special operations commanders through day and night low level infiltration/exfiltration, helicopter/tilt-rotor aerial refueling, and aerial delivery resupply of special operations forces.
