A C-5C Galaxy crew from the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis AFB, California, flew the US Navy’s second Mobile User Objective System, or MUOS, satellite from Moffett Federal Airfield, California, to Cape Canaveral AFS, Florida, on 13 May 2013. MUOS-2 is scheduled for a July launch aboard an Atlas V booster. MUOS improves current secure mobile satellite communications. The four operational MUOS satellites will link military mobile users to a high speed voice and steaming data system similar to that of a consumer smartphone. The C-5C is a C-5A modified to carry unusually shaped, oversized cargo. Two aircraft received the Space Cargo Modification in the late 1980s. Both aircraft are scheduled to be upgraded to C-5M Super Galaxy standard.
