The US Air Force’s 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, the oldest flying unit in US military aviation, celebrated its 100th anniversary 7-9 March 2013 in ceremonies at Beale AFB, California. Among a series of events, the squadron, which currently flies the U-2 Dragon Lady high altitude reconnaissance aircraft, dedicated a plaque at the base’s Heritage Park and also unveiled commemorative artwork commissioned for the Air Force Art Program. The squadron has maintained an unbroken lineage since it was commissioned on 5 March 1913. Then designated as the 1st Aero Squadron, the unit participated in the Mexican Punitive Expedition. The 1st RS has flown forty-seven different aircraft types while being stationed worldwide at fifty-two locations, including four stints at sea.
