Military forces from the US and partner nations, including Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, carried out airstrikes against fourteen Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIL, terrorist sites in Syria on 23 September. The first wave began around midnight in Syria when the crews of the USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) and the USS Philippine Sea (CG-58) launched more than forty BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles in eastern and northern Syria. The second wave consisted of US Air Force Airmen in F-22s, F-15Es, F-16s, and B-1s, as well as unmanned vehicles launched from bases in the region against targets in northern Syria. The final wave included F/A-18 pilots from the USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) and regionally-based US F-16 pilots attacking targets in eastern Syria. This strike was the first time the F-22 was used in combat. The Raptor pilots, deployed from the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley AFB, Virginia, released 1,000-pound GBU-32 Joint Direct Attack Munitions, targeting only the center and right side of an ISIL command and control center, as shown here. All aircraft safely exited the strike areas.
